Who Created PowerPoint? The Story Behind Microsoft's Presentation Software

Although PowerPoint has been synonymous with Microsoft for nearly four decades, the company was not its original creator. Microsoft actually acquired the small Silicon Valley team that built it, and Apple was the other serious contender for the purchase. Below is the full story of how a start-up's clever idea grew into the world's most widely used presentation tool, and how you can get a genuine copy today.

The Origins: Forethought Inc.

In 1984, Robert Gaskins and Dennis Austin began developing a presentation program at a Silicon Valley company called Forethought Inc. It was initially named Presenter, and its goal was to replace the cumbersome process of creating overhead transparencies by hand, a chore familiar to anyone who gave business talks in the early 1980s. After a trademark conflict forced a rename, the software was relaunched as PowerPoint and shipped for the Apple Macintosh in April 1987. The first version was black and white only, designed to print neat slides on transparency film.

Microsoft Steps In

Just three months after PowerPoint's launch, Microsoft acquired Forethought for approximately $14 million, its first major acquisition of another company. The purchase gave Microsoft an instant foothold in the presentation market and eventually led to PowerPoint being bundled alongside Word and Excel as part of Microsoft Office. Interestingly, Apple had also been in discussions to buy Forethought, and many historians consider the PowerPoint deal a turning point that shaped Microsoft's productivity empire.

PowerPoint's Evolution Through the Decades

Over the years PowerPoint has grown from simple slide layouts into a feature-rich platform supporting animations, transitions, embedded video, real-time collaboration and AI-powered design suggestions. The introduction of the ribbon interface in 2007, the move to cloud co-authoring with Office 2013, and the SmartArt and Designer tools all marked meaningful leaps in usability. Today PowerPoint is included in every edition of Microsoft 365, as well as in perpetual licence versions such as Office 2021 and Office 2024.

PowerPoint Today

The latest versions include Copilot integration for generating entire slide decks from a short prompt, Cameo for embedding a live camera feed directly into slides, and a growing library of polished templates. You can explore more creative presentation features to make your decks stand out. PowerPoint is available on Windows, macOS, iOS, Android and the web, so you can pick up your work on almost any device.

Why PowerPoint Still Dominates

Despite competition from Google Slides, Keynote, Prezi and Canva, PowerPoint remains the default choice in business, education and government. Its strength lies in its deep feature set, broad file compatibility and tight integration with Word, Excel and Teams. For organisations already invested in Microsoft's ecosystem, PowerPoint is the natural workhorse for pitches, lectures, training decks and board meetings. Genuine vs Unofficial Copies

Because PowerPoint is so widely used, it is also widely pirated. Cracked versions routinely bundle malware, lose access to updates, and can leave sensitive client presentations exposed. We recommend reading why you should never use pirated software before downloading anything from an unofficial source. A genuine licence is inexpensive, activates instantly and keeps you on the supported update path.
