Back to School and Office: Best Software Prices (2026)

It is time to prepare your computer for everything that lies ahead. Whether you are heading back to school, university or the office, we are making it as easy as possible to equip your devices with the software you actually need, at the best possible prices.

After the long summer break and, for many families, a period of working and learning flexibly from home, the return to routine is always a busy one. Between buying textbooks, organising timetables and catching up with colleagues, the last thing you want to worry about is whether your laptop is still fit for purpose. A quick software refresh now can save you hours of frustration later.

Technology plays a central role in classrooms and workplaces alike. Pupils submit assignments through cloud platforms, university students rely on Word and Excel for their coursework, and office teams coordinate projects through Outlook, Teams and shared documents. To keep pace with all of this, your operating system and productivity suite need to be up to date, genuine and properly licensed.

Our back-to-school advice: prioritise security

Security is key

The single most important consideration when refreshing your setup is security. Computers are not just used at school or in the office -- many children and adults need them at home too, often on shared networks and with sensitive data such as banking details, school portals and company files. An outdated operating system or pirated copy of Office is an open door for malware and identity theft.

In recent years, many people discovered that their equipment was virtually obsolete the moment a major software update rolled out. Avoid data loss, viruses, ransomware and hacking attempts by investing in genuine, up-to-date software. You will benefit from frequent updates, security patches and official technical support, all of which save money in the long run. For a deeper look at the risks, read our article on why you should never use pirated software.

Which software should you choose?

Students generally need a reliable operating system and a full office suite for essays, presentations and spreadsheets. Professionals often require the same tools, plus stronger collaboration features and, in some cases, advanced applications such as Access or Publisher. Fortunately, you do not have to pay full retail prices to get a genuine licence.

For the operating system, Windows 11 Pro is the most future-proof choice, offering the latest security features, improved performance and support for modern hardware. If your device is a little older, Windows 10 Pro remains a solid option. You can browse every edition on our Windows licences hub.

For productivity, Office 2019 Professional Plus and the newer Office 2021 editions both give you perpetual licences -- you pay once and keep the software for good. If you prefer cloud features, OneDrive storage and always-on updates, a Microsoft 365 subscription may suit you better. Our guide on Office 2019 vs Office 365 breaks down the differences, and our article on which Microsoft Office programme you need helps you pick the right edition for your studies or job.
