Which German tax software fits your return?
TAXMAN suits employees, pensioners, landlords and self-employed people preparing their own returns. It is not TAXMAN professional: Lexware reserves work on behalf of others for that licence. Compare WISO Steuer 2026 for browser/mobile access, Buhl tax 2026 for its Windows interview, and SteuerSparErklärung 2026 for Windows or Mac.
For a straightforward return, the tax administration’s free Mein ELSTER portal may be sufficient if you can complete the forms yourself.

Tools for preparing the 2025 return
The interview combines context-sensitive explanations with an input checker. A receipt manager organises supporting documents, while the calculation shows an estimated refund or payment as you enter figures. The data-transfer assistant accepts previous TAXMAN and QuickSteuer data; pre-filled tax-office data and ELSTER transmission are also supported.
The product page lists German Windows 10 64-bit or Windows 11, a 2 GHz processor and 2 GB RAM, with 4 GB recommended. Internet and product activation are required.
Activation and first submission
- Use the official TAXMAN 2026 download supplied in the email.
- Enter the supplied serial number when prompted by the installer and complete activation.
- Create or import your 2025 return, check the entries and install available updates before ELSTER submission.
For a rejected serial number, first check that you installed TAXMAN 2026 rather than QuickSteuer or another annual edition. Send Licendi the error text if activation still fails. Licendi’s activation guarantee lasts one month: if the key does not activate within that period, support helps or replaces it.
Tax year, updates and filing dates
This purchase covers the 2026 edition for tax year 2025; a 2026 income-tax return needs the 2027 edition. Install the publisher’s available updates before submitting. ELSTER transmission depends on the tax administration’s services and components. If you are not required to file, you have four years to submit a voluntary 2025 income-tax return (Antragsveranlagung), until 31 December 2029. If you are required to file and had no tax adviser, you should submit your return as soon as possible. Questions before buying
Is TAXMAN 2026 suitable for a tax-preparation business?
This is the private edition. Five returns do not mean five client licences; Lexware requires TAXMAN professional for preparing returns on behalf of others.
How does TAXMAN calculate my refund?
It recalculates the estimate from your entries. The displayed result can also be a payment due; it is not a promise of the tax office’s final assessment.
Can an English-speaking resident use it?
You can use it for a German return if the supported tax situation fits, but the software and return are in German. The storefront language does not change the program language.
