Fix "Sorry, Something Went Wrong and Word Was Unable to Start"

Few things are more frustrating than double-clicking a Word document and being greeted by the message "Sorry, something went wrong and Word was unable to start". This error can appear after a Windows update, an Office upgrade or seemingly out of nowhere. The good news is that it is almost always fixable without reinstalling your operating system or losing documents. Why does this error appear?

The error is generic, but it almost always points to one of four underlying problems: a corrupted add-in, a damaged Normal.dotm template, a broken Office installation or a conflict between two co-existing Office versions. 1. Disable faulty add-ins

Corrupted or incompatible add-ins are the number-one trigger. Start Word in Safe Mode by pressing Win + R, typing winword /safe and pressing Enter. If Word opens cleanly, go to File > Options > Add-ins, select COM Add-ins from the drop-down and click Go. Disable the add-ins one by one, restarting Word each time, until the culprit is identified. Third-party PDF converters and grammar extensions are the most common offenders.

2. Rename the Normal.dotm template

A corrupted default template can prevent Word from starting entirely. Close Word, open File Explorer and navigate to %AppData%\Microsoft\Templates. Rename Normal.dotm to Normal.old. Word will recreate a clean template automatically on next launch. You will lose custom styles stored in that file, but most users never notice the difference.

3. Repair the Office installation

If the application works under the new profile, the issue is profile-specific and you can migrate your data across rather than reinstalling Office.

5. Update Windows and Office

Outdated system files can clash with newer Office builds, particularly after a feature update. Run Windows Update until no further updates are pending, then open any Office app and go to File > Account > Update Options > Update Now.
