Is Standard the right Windows Server edition?
Choose Standard for a file server, domain services or a modest virtualisation deployment. If you expect many Windows Server VMs or need Storage Spaces Direct, compare Datacenter in our Windows Server range. Check application and hardware compatibility before replacing an existing installation.
What you receive: OEM and Retail options
| Variant | Core coverage | Access licences |
|---|---|---|
| 2 Cores OEM | 2-core add-on | CALs purchased separately |
| 2 Cores Retail | 2-core add-on | CALs purchased separately |
| 16 Cores OEM | 16 cores | CALs purchased separately |
| 16 Cores Retail | 16 cores | 5 User CALs included |
| 32 Cores Retail | 32 cores | 5 User CALs included |
OEM allows one activation and is tied to the original server hardware; replacing that hardware loses the licence. Retail permits reinstallation or transfer, with only one server active at a time. Licendi guarantees one activation for Retail. The five User CALs come with Licendi's 16- and 32-core Retail versions.
Email delivery is immediate during office hours and within 24 hours outside them. A PDF invoice with VAT shown is included. Business buyers can request a multi-unit quote by email or chat.
Core licensing and virtual machine limits
Standard includes Active Directory Domain Services, file services and Hyper-V. License every physical core, with a minimum of 8 per processor and 16 per server. A server with two 10-core processors needs 20 core licences: 16 + 2 + 2. See how to count cores.
Full core coverage grants two operating system environments, physical or virtual. With two VMs running, an additional physical Windows Server installation may only host and manage them. Each further pair requires licensing all required cores again. Buying two extra cores alone does not add two VM rights.
Activation and first steps
- Check processor core counts, user access needs and application compatibility.
- Download the supplied installation media and install Windows Server 2025 Standard.
- Enter the supplied product key and complete Windows activation; retain the invoice and licence records.
If activation fails, check the installed edition and send support the error code by email or chat. An Evaluation installation can require conversion before activation; ask for guidance before changing a production server. During the 1-month activation guarantee, Licendi helps resolve activation failures or replaces the key.
Support through 2034
Microsoft mainstream support ends on 13 November 2029; extended support ends on 14 November 2034. The perpetual licence does not expire then, but routine security updates end with extended support. Plan migration before that deadline.
Windows Server 2025 licence questions
Can I buy just the 2-core version?
Only as an add-on to sufficient existing coverage. Even a small physical server requires at least 16 core licences.
Do five User CALs mean five concurrent connections?
No. They cover five users, each across their devices. Every accessing user or device needs appropriate coverage; see our Windows Server CALs.
Are Remote Desktop access licences included?
The included Retail User CALs are base Windows Server access rights. Remote Desktop Services requires additional RDS CALs.
Can I license only the virtual cores of a VM?
Microsoft reserves per-VM licensing for subscription licences or licences with active Software Assurance. This perpetual key alone does not establish that entitlement.
