Windows 10 gets a new search highlights feature for Release Preview Insiders

Microsoft has started rolling out a new search function for Windows Insiders. The feature was first released last week in Windows 11 build 22572, but Microsoft has announced that it will soon be available in Windows 10. The feature is included in Windows 10 build 19044.1618.

Highlight Search

Search Highlights is a new experience for the search bar integrated into the Windows 10 taskbar. When you open Search and type nothing, you are greeted with a new experience that highlights fun facts and trivia depending on the day.

In the example shown by Microsoft, you can see that the search alerts you to the fact that 22 April is Earth Day, and alongside this you are also shown suggestions for outdoor activities to try. There is also a link to historical events that took place on that day.

On this page you will also find information on the latest news, new Microsoft gift offers and advanced searches of the day. Also on the left side of the search window, you will find a long list of recent applications and files you have worked on.

For users with a professional or school account, the required items are different. Users are shown important information about your company. You can search for files and people directly in your work.

If you are not interested, you can disable this feature by right-clicking on the taskbar, going to Search and unchecking Show Search Highlights.

In addition to the big new feature, Windows 10 build 19044.1618 brings a few other improvements. In particular, app messages can now use a different colour for message buttons, making it easier to indicate the success or failure of the operation. In addition, apps can now display up to three fully enhanced notifications in the Action Centre.

This update is only available to users who do not have a computer that is eligible to upgrade to Windows 11. Otherwise, you can join the Release Preview Channel and you will be updated to Windows 11 the next time you check for updates.

Since it is already available in the Release Preview channel, you can expect the search highlights to reach most Windows 10 (and Windows 11) users soon. It will most likely appear as part of the optional cumulative update this month and then be included in the Patch Tuesday updates in April.
